Strangers to the cocktail weenie either giggle or smirk when you suggest them. But at any party where cocktail weenies grace the table, you’ll find a crowd around a crock pot stuffing weenie after weenie into their greedy maws. Inevitably, one person always singles themselves out as the biggest cocktail weenie pig and goes home with the nickname “Li’l Smokie.” They may be Homer Simpson’s favorite appetizer (who describes the sauce: “It looks like ketchup, it tastes like ketchup, but baby, it ain’t ketchup!”), but even snobby Malin secretly relishes Li’l Smokies. You’ll need a crock pot. For extra kick, add whatever spicy stuff you have on hand: Tabasco, habanero sauce, pickled serranos. Don’t go crazy, though–they’re addictive & you don’t want a roomful of heartburn.
2 packages cocktail weekies, aka Li’l Smokies
2 cups ketchup
1/4 cup pickled jalapeños, minced
1/4 cup Hell of a Relish, or another spicy veggie relish
1/4 cup jelly or jam, whatever type you have on hand
Combine all ingredients in a crock pot.
Turn on high for 15 minutes, then reduce to low. These are best after half an hour or so. Since they take about one minute to prep, I usually throw them together before I start making food or doing last-minute preparations.
